The translator must be highly adaptable in order to remain faithful to the author’s style. They also need good general knowledge along with creativity and imagination. A skilled translator remains true to the author’s intent while gaining sufficient perspective to make the message their own and render it in the target language.
The question of subjectivity is probably even stronger for literary translation than for any other type of document, as the level of quality can only be defined as a function of the various requirements and the appreciation of the readership or the public.
